&
Birdie's Big-Girl Shoes by Sujean Rim

Sunday, November 1, 2009, 4–5PM
powerHouse Arena · 37 Main Street (corner of Water & Main St) · DUMBO, Brooklyn

Please join us for a Sunday afternoon kids' Reading at The powerHouse Arena, featuring two terrific author/illustrators.

About Birdie's Big-Girl Shoes:
Birdie carefully slipped her little toes into one shoe,
then slid into the other.

She looked at herself in the mirror...
and gasped.

Birdie can't wait to be just like her mom. She loves wearing jewelry, spritzing perfume bottles, and dressing up in front of the mirror. But more than anything, Birdie fantasizes about her mother's fancy high heels. She can't wait to try them on and do all her favorite things wearing beautiful "big-girl shoes." Little girls will love walking with Birdie as she spends a day in her mother's shoes, but in the end they may find that, like Birdie, they like their "barefoot shoes" best of all. With playful watercolors and clever, textured, cut-paper designs, this precious picture book will speak to every little girl who longs to be a "big girl".

About Fu Finds the Way:
When the warrior Chang challenges young Fu to a duel, Fu panics. His only hope is that the Master will train him, just as he's trained all the young warriors of the village. But instead of teaching Fu to fight, the Master teaches him...to pour tea. Fu learns purpose, flow and patience in the process, but will it be enough to defeat the mighty Chang? With his signature breathtaking art, John Rocco has created a modern parable full of adventure, heart, humor, and a gentle message about the importance of focus and finding joy in simple tasks.

About Sujean Rim:
Sujean Rim is best known for her signature watercolor designs on the popular DailyCandy website. Originally a shoe and accessory designer, Sujean has been commissioned by clients including Tiffany & Co., Barneys, Elle Decor, and Target. About John Rocco:
John Rocco is the author and illustrator of Moonpowder (Hyperion, 2008), and Wolf! Wolf! (Hyperion, 2007), and the illustrator of Alice(Bantam, 1992), by Whoopi Goldberg. He earned his degrees from RISD and The School of the Visual Arts and worked for several years in L.A. on such projects as Shrek (as Pre-Production Art Director) and at the Disneyquest theme park. He was the winner of the SCBWI New York Showcase in 2004 and 2007, and the winner of the 2008 Borders Original Voices Award. Fu Finds the Way was inspired by a visit to a shop in Hong Kong, where John spotted a beautiful teapot in the window. He had to have tea with the owner, an elderly Chinese woman, before he could buy the teapot. Her deft movements serving the tea were mesmerizing. "She was not just making tea," John says, "She was making art." John lives with his wife (another children's book author/artist) and daughter in a loft in Brooklyn, NY.
