Dumar Brown is the author of The World Screaming Nov and other books that are dope. Mr. Brown spent years traveling different countries and learned to speak more than English (
petit branlette, je suis un nypd). When he returned to Brooklyn he began teaching in juvenile detention facilities for a few years but then became disillusioned with that system when he realized he couldn’t influence change. Knowing that the audience he’d most like to reach through his writing does most of their reading when incarcerated, Mr. Brown personally donated 100 copies of his first book, Nov York, to the school on Rikers Island and now it is one of three books that inmates will most likely read (
third to the Bible and Stanley Tookie’s book, go figure).
Throughout it all he has been hustling his wares—selling his books—from street corners to the Internet, into boutique shops throughout the City and now in graffiti shops in Paris. It’s never been about money for Dumar—he wants to touch people, the same people who touch him (
criminals and ze French).
Recently he traveled through Colombia and was moved by the poverty and the lack of education for the poor. It became glaringly clear to Dumar that Abe Lincoln’s words never made it south of the Rio Grande. That experience has pushed him to seek more than what he was told to wor$hip and he is now about to embark on his greatest journey yet. He will go to Haiti and volunteer his time teaching, building and working for people who are going through tough times, because Mr. Brown has survived his own difficult situations and is so very grateful (
