The purveyors of the tastiest popsicles in the borough discuss their journey from pop-up pop shop to brick-and-mortar success story.

About People's Pops:

The coolest trend to hit Brooklyn is oh so sweet, sustainable, and served on a stick. What began as a one-day venture followed by a modest stand at the Brooklyn Flea has become a pop phenomenon. People's Pops is credited with inspiring the nouveau pop craze that has taken the country by storm, and is enticing people far beyond the five boroughs to fall in love with its seasonally-inspired, hip, and inventive ice pops.

Founded spontaneously in 2008 by Nathalie Jordi, David Carrell, and Joel Horowitz, People's Pops was born of a challenge too delicious to pass up. A friend was starting a public market for local food producers, and invited the trio to participate. They quickly accepted. And, though they hadn't even tried it, they figured that ice pops made from local and sustainably grown fruits, herbs, and organic sugar had to taste good. On the first day, they bought rhubarb, strawberries, cream, blueberries, yogurt, and honey at the Union Square farmers' market. On day two, they made the pops. On the third day, they sold out of their inspired creations in three hours with a line still dozens long. And the pops? They were totally delicious and quickly lauded as "the new cupcake."

Since its extraordinarily successful debut, People's Pops has set up shops (both permanent and pop-ups) at Chelsea Market, the High Line, and the Village; counts Martha Stewart, Marc Jacobs, Jon Stewart, and Rachael Ray—among others—as fans; draws more than 26,000 unique visits to its site; and has set the blogosphere ablaze with its mindful reinvention of a humble American favorite.

Now the trio is sharing its DIY ethos—praised by the New York Times, Food & Wine, Bon Appétit, the Huffington Post, Inc. magazine, and more—in a breezy, fun cookbook. People's Pops is a tasty collection of 55 recipes with flavor combinations that range from popular favorites to the sophisticated and exotic, and chapters that explore the bounty of the season.
