We're thrilled to invite you to our new location's inaugural event! Local favorite Pete Hamill visits POWERHOUSE on 8th to read and sign The Christmas Kid and Other Brooklyn Stories. A fitting kickoff; as a kid, Pete Hamill, who grew up in South Slope, used to sneak into our old store (then an ice cream parlor) instead of going to church. We couldn't think of a more appropriate beginning.

About The Christmas Kid:

This collection of Brooklyn-based stories spans thirty years of the legendary Pete Hamill's career. Never before together in one volume·and featuring a previously unpublished story, "Up the Roof"·these are Pete Hamill's tales about Brooklyn, the borough in which he was born and raised, and the one closest to his heart.

These are stories of a New York almost lost but not forgotten. They read like messages from a vanished age, brimming with nostalgia, which Hamill has called the most common New York emotion. The characters in this volume inhabit the old New York, or they hear its siren call. They live in a Brooklyn created by immigrants, who in turn remember the old country in Ireland, Italy, or Eastern Europe. They live their lives in apartments and bars, schools and stadiums, and most importantly, at work at the waterfront and in the factories. Brooklyn has changed a great deal, as has the wider world, and Hamill's characters navigate those changes through wars, Prohibition, The Great Depression, the devastation brought on by heroin and crack, up to the present colonization by young professionals and baby strollers and artistic and literary types.

Full of short fiction that has been unavailable for years, this book is classic Hamill·a must read for his fans, for those who love New York, and for anyone who seeks to understand the world today through the lens of what was.

Pete Hamill is a novelist, journalist, editor, and screenwriter. He is the author of twenty-one previous books, including the bestselling novels Snow in August, Forever, North River, and Tabloid City, and the bestselling memoir A Drinking Life. He lives in New York City.
