Join us for a reading to celebrate emerging and established writers alike, each one handpicked and introduced by book and magazine publishers Henry Holt & Co., One Teen Story, A Public Space, and Slice.

About Slice: 

Slice, a Brooklyn-based nonprofit print magazine, was launched in 2007 by book editors Maria Gagliano and Celia Johnson and has since garnered rave reviews from some of today’s leading authors, editors, and agents. Pulitzer prize-winning author Junot Diaz praises, “Beautiful, compelling, irresistible: Slice will knock you right out. In the best way possible.” At the core, Slice aims to bridge the gap between emerging and established authors by offering a space where both are published side-by-side. In each issue, a specific cultural theme becomes the catalyst for articles and interviews from renowned writers and lesser known voices alike. Along with these pieces, we publish fiction and poetry that isn’t bound by the theme—we simply look for works by writers who promise to become tomorrow’s literary legends.

Slice has had tremendous success, with a steadily growing circulation, from the local literary community to readers worldwide. The magazine is published twice each year, in March and September. We have published interviews with bestselling and prize-winning authors including Salman Rushdie, Elizabeth Strout, Kathryn Stockett, Tana French, Lisa See, Paul Auster, Jonathan Lethem, and A. J. Jacobs, among many others. The magazine is run by two book editors at major publishing houses (Penguin and the Hachette Book Group), along with a team of publishing professionals. Many of our first-time authors have connected with agents and then landed book deals as a result of being published in the magazine.

About the Readers: 

Sara Majka stories have appeared in A Public Space, The Gettysburg Review, and Massachusetts Review. In 2016, A Public Space will publish her debut story collection in collaboration with Graywolf Press.

Ted Thompson’s debut novel The Land of Steady Habits was published in March by Little, Brown and was recently long-listed for the Flaherty-Dunnan First Novel Prize. He has published stories in Tin House, American Short Fiction, and Best New American Voices, among other places, and has a story about boarding-school werewolves forthcoming in One Teen Story. He teaches for the Sackett Street Writers’ Workshop and lives in Brooklyn with his wife and their dog, Raisin.

Justin Taylor is the author of the story collections Flings and Everything Here Is the Best Thing Ever and the novel The Gospel of Anarchy. His work has appeared in the New Yorker, the Believer, Tablet, Tin House, and the New York Times Book Review. He lives in Brooklyn and at justindtaylor.net.

Ingrid Nelson recently finished up her junior year at Columbia University where she is studying creative writing. She grew up in Brooklyn and Charlottesville, Virginia. She now lives in a dorm room in Manhattan.

Kseniya Melnik’s debut book is the linked story collection Snow in May, which was published in May in the United States and the United Kingdom. Born in Magadan, Russia, she moved to Alaska in 1998 at the age of fifteen. She received her MFA from New York University and currently lives in El Paso, Texas. Her work has appeared in The Brooklyn Rail, Epoch, Virginia Quarterly Review, and Prospect (U.K.) and was selected for Granta’s New Voices series.
