Charlotte Silver paints an achingly real portrait of young adulthood and the ways friendships evolve. Set in New York, Silver captures a youthful idealism and folly that’s universal in nature to produce a ruefully funny, cautionary tale. Alida Nugent, author of Don’t Worry, It Gets Worse, joins her in conversation.

About Bennington Girls are Easy:

“This is such a delightful, affectionate satire of a best friendship gone awry. Charlotte Silver has a sharp eye for the deeply goofy consumption patterns of the young bourgeois bohemian (yes to artisanal lemonade; no to Trader Joe’s frozen hors d’oeuvres), and for the ill-advised love affairs they pursue. This book is honest, caustic and a lot of fun.”  —Jessica Grose, author of Sad Desk Salad and The Closest Marriage

Charlotte Silver, author of the memoir Charlotte au Chocolat and the young adult novel Summer Invitation returns this summer with Bennington Girls are Easy, a razor-sharp coming-of-age story about the ups and downs of two college graduates who are determined to make it in New York City.

When recent graduates of the Bennington College class of 2003 Cassandra and Sylvie make their way to New York, they discover the urgent highs and embarrassing lows that accompany every rite of passage in the Big Apple. Artsy (without any real artistic talent) and intellectual (without the time to read an actual book), their early delirious years are spent decorating their Fort Greene apartment with flea-market gems, dating “artists,” and trying to figure out what they’re doing with their lives, all while their former Bennington classmates flit in and out, operating as a hilarious Greek chorus to Cassandra and Sylvie’s recurring pattern of romantic disasters and professional missteps. But it’s their emotionally complex and formative relationship that forms the heart of their story.

Alida Nugent is the author of Don’t Worry, it Gets Worse, and is the creator of The Frenemy, a female-centric comedy blog that is devoted to making weird girls feel good about themselves. Since its creation over three years ago, it has appeared on The Huffington Post, Thought CatalogGothamistHelloGigglesRefinery 29, and crumb-filled laptops everywhere. A graduate of Emerson College, Nugent majored in writing and is as shocked as you are that, in this economy, she is able to find a living doing that.
