About the Book.
Text me when you get home. Those six words are a parting ritual for countless female friends, whether they’re spoken after a night out or an afternoon coffee. Yes, it’s about safety and keeping an eye out for each other, but those words also represent the solidarity, strength and love that goes into these friendships. It’s another way of saying I’m here for you, or I’ve got your back.
Journalist Kayleen Schaefer’s new book TEXT ME WHEN YOU GET HOME: The Evolution and Triumph of Modern Female Friendship, explores the cultural importance of the shift in favor of female friendships and the empowerment that they provide. Schaefer examines public celebrations of girlfriends and digs into her personal experiences navigating these very same relationships, using her journalistic skills to explore this terrain like never before.
From Mean Girls’ Regina George to #squadgoals, the narrative surrounding female friendships is changing. Girls who grew up in a world of Queen Bees and cliques, competition and cattiness, are increasingly rejecting this construction—and the shift is as apparent in our daily lives as it is in academia and pop culture. Everyone from scholars to Hollywood actors are speaking out about why friendships between women carry as much weight and significance as any other relationship. The proof is probably in your Netflix queue right now: think Leslie Knope and Ann Perkins (Parks and Recreation), Abbi and Ilana (Broad City), or the infamous Sex and the City quartet. It’s a truth women have known for ages: female friendships can be just as rich, intimate, and complex as any other relationship, and society is taking notice.
