About the Event:
Foster will read from their story collection, Shine of the Ever, and Lilly will read from her memoir, Negative Space. These works are set in and infused with 90s Portland and 90s New York City, respectively, and will be the point of departure for a cross-genre and bi-coastal discussion of setting-as-character and the uses of nostalgia in creating narrative tension and mood.

About the Authors:
Lilly Dancyger is a contributing editor at Catapult, and assistant editor at Barrelhouse Books. She’s the editor of Burn It Down, a critically acclaimed anthology of essays on women’s anger from Seal Press, named one of the “most recommended books of the season” by Literary Hub. Lily is also the author of Negative Space, a reported and illustrated memoir selected by Carmen Maria Machado as a winner of the 2019 Santa Fe Writers Project Literary Awards, forthcoming in 2021.
Lilly is the founder and host of Memoir Monday, a weekly newsletter and quarterly reading series co-curated by Narratively, The Rumpus, Guernica, Granta, Longreads, and Catapult, featuring the best memoir writers of today. Her writing has been published by Longreads, the Washington Post, Glamour, Playboy, Rolling Stone, and more. She lives in New York City.

Claire Rudy Foster’s recent collection, Shine of the Ever, has received stellar praise, with Pete Rock, Benjamin Percy, O: The Oprah Magazine, and Foreword Reviews singing its praises. By turns tender and punk-tough, Shine of the Ever is a literary mixtape of queer voices out of 1990s Portland. This collection of short stories explores what binds a community of queer and trans people as they negotiate love, screwing up, and learning to forgive themselves for being young and, sometimes, foolish.

Foster is a queer, nonbinary trans writer who lives in Portland, Oregon. Their work on sex, identity, relationships, and recovery has appeared in the New York Times, the Washington Post, and McSweeney’s, among others. Foster is the author of I’ve Never Done This Before (978-0998072708, Sept. 2016). Their essays and fiction have been recognized for excellence, including four nominations for the Pushcart Prize. Foster holds an MFA in creative writing and teaches writing workshops in Portland. Foster has been in recovery from alcoholism and addiction since 2007. They co-authored American Fix: Inside the Opioid Addiction Crisis and How to End It (St. Martin’s Press, 2018) with activist Ryan Hampton. Foster was recently featured on OPB’s Think Out Loud, The Rumpus, Literary Hub, Electric Literature, and on New Day Northwest, among many others.
