New York City at Christmastime is famous for a lot of things: the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree, holiday markets, the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall, the windows at Macy’s on 34th St, ice skating in the park. But if there’s one thing New Yorkers truly have their pick of every holiday season, it’s Nutcrackers. Lots and lots of Nutcrackers.
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s ballet was first staged in 1892 and has since become a beloved Christmas staple for multiple New York City ballet companies, with over twenty different productions staged in 2023 alone. For many children, it’s their first exposure to ballet (sometimes with the help of pop culture icons like Barbie and Mickey Mouse), and might even be the first ballet in which they themselves get to dance! Join Miss Phoebe of Tutu School Dumbo and Powerhouse’s own Megan Lerseth for a kid-friendly deep dive into the story and music of The Nutcracker, along with insights into what it takes to put on the ballet and a demonstration from Miss Phoebe!
