Alana Massey will be here to talk about All the Lives I Want, her new essay collection aiming to examine the intersection of the personal with pop culture through the lives of pivotal female figures – from Sylvia Plath to Lil’ Kim.
About All the Lives I Want:
In looking closely at the lives of female celebrities who reflect our greatest aspirations and darkest fears back onto us, Alana Massey is personal without being confessional, and clever in a way that invites readers into the joke. With stories ranging from how the public developed a sense of ownership over Britney Spears, to the struggles of growing up an Olsen twin, and finding unlikely threads of kinship between Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes and Princess Diana—All the Lives I Want is so much more than a finely wrought fan letter. It serves as an exploration of mental illness, the sex industry and the dangers of loving too hard. This book will help us re-examine the stories we’ve been fed about celebrities and their scandals, and combat the oversimplified morality narratives from the media. All the Lives I Want takes a crucial step towards de-legitimizing the sexist, false storytelling structures surrounding female celebrities that often go unchallenged.
