Join author Joe Dolce and V (formerly Eve Ensler) in a provocative and personal conversation to celebrate the publication of Joe’s new book, Modern Psychedelics: The Handbook For Mindful Exploration
About the Book.
There’s a global resurgence of interest in psychedelics, but there has not been a comprehensive, reliable book that combines contemporary science, ancient wisdom, and practical guidance for using these mysterious, magical molecules. Until now.
Journalist Joe Dolce delivers this and more in MODERN PSYCHEDELICS (August 5, 2025; Black Dog & Leventhal; Paperback; $25), a meticulously researched, user-friendly guide for psychedelic users, the psychedelic-curious, and wellness enthusiasts alike. The book provides guidance on preparing for journeys, responsible use, and how to make meaning from these profound experiences while avoiding preventable problems. Along the way Dolce painlessly explains what happens in our brains on psychedelics and how the increased neuroplasticity creates neural openings for meaningful change.
MODERN PSYCHEDELICS covers benefits, dosing guidelines, and risks of all of the major psychedelics: MDMA, Magic Mushrooms, Ketamine, DMT/5-MeO-DMT, Ayahuasca, LSD, Mescaline/ Peyote/ Huachuma, and Ibogaine/Iboga. The book also brings to light:
- Promising research on ways psychedelics are being used to treat crippling illnesses that have eluded modern medicine for decades: PTSD, chronic depression, anxiety and addiction (to opioids, alcohol, tobacco, even smartphones), among them
- The widely reported but little understood benefits of microdosing such as enhanced mindfulness, improved mood and motor skills, and a greater sense of interconnection, and how to approach it skillfully
- Ways couples and close friends are using psychedelics to increase emotional intimacy and connection
- Harm reduction techniques such as engaging and vetting a guide or sitter, factoring in setting, integration, potency and purity testing
- Sidebars that answer common questions like ““Will psychedelics make me fail a drug test?” and “How To Mitigate the Nausea from Mushrooms”
- A powerful foreword and essays from experts in the field such as Julie Holland, MD, and Dr. Gul Dolen, and a decades-long ayahuasquero.
Says Dolce: “Ram Dass once said, ‘For grass you should have the equivalent of a driver’s license, and for LSD you should have the equivalent of a pilot’s license.’ This is true for all psychedelics and whiis book won’t provide the license, it will help you get the plane off the ground, into the right flight path, and safely landed. It can help reduce unexpected turbulence and alert you if you shouldn’t be flying at all.”
