About the Exhibition.

This October 3-7, 2018, the powerHouse Arena will be hosting an exhibition by photographers associated with the NYC Department of Probation’s Neighborhood Opportunity Network, in partnership with the nonprofit Seeing for Ourselves.

The exhibit features documentary photographs by young adults on probation and other community residents who participated in a 12-week photography workshop at NeON locations in Bed-Stuy, Brownsville, and East New York.

The photographers received professional photography training in workshops designed by the nonprofit to introduce participants to the history of photography, technical skills, and the art of visual storytelling. Sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts, the classes are the part of a citywide series that will continue at NeON locations in Harlem, the Bronx, Queens, and Staten Island later this year.

New York City’s Department of Probation is the second-largest in the country, enjoying the reputation of an industry leader thanks to NeON and other innovations.

The NeON photography exhibition will include an opening reception with refreshments on Wednesday, October 3, from 6-9PM. Select photos will be available for purchase, with the photographer receiving 100% of the proceeds from such sales.

About the Organization.

This exhibit (on display through October 7th) is in partnership with the participatory photography nonprofit Seeing for Ourselves, whose first effort, Project Lives: New York Residents of Public Housing Photograph Their World, (powerHouse, 2015) had a global impact. Select photos will be available for purchase, with the photographer receiving 100% of the proceeds from such sales.

The Neighborhood Opportunity Network (NeON) is a NYC Department of Probation model of community-based supervision. At the heart of the NeON is a network of partners – individuals and organizations, public and private – working together to improve public safety and promote the success of people on probation by working with them in neighborhood settings. The NeON model physically manifests as a network of DOP offices operating in partnership with local service providers and community-based organizations in seven neighborhoods where sizable numbers of people on probation reside. NeON programs are free to community members in NeON neighborhoods regardless of their justice involvement. NeON offices are in Brownsville, East New York, Bedford Stuyvesant, Jamaica, Staten Island, the South Bronx and Harlem.
