Event Associate/Bookseller
Job Type: Part Time
The powerhouse Arena, a bookstore, art, and event space in the Dumbo area of Brooklyn, is looking for an experienced, passionate, self-motivated part-time (3-4 days) bookseller who has a strong interest in photography, design, and literature. Our book boutique focuses on photography and illustrated books, and has a curated fiction, nonfiction, and children’s books section.
We are looking for a dedicated, sales-driven individual with a strong work ethic and a welcoming personality.
This is an opportunity to not only work with a small, dedicated staff to curate a dynamic series of events at an independent bookstore, but also to engage with some of the movers and shakers of New York City’s literary community.
An independent, mature individual who can establish and set their own priorities, make work plans, and execute them with efficiency and speed with little to no day-to-day direction or support.
Note: While this position is for those interested in working at our Dumbo location, bookseller shifts at the Industry City and Park Slope locations will be required. Additionally, since events are held in the evening, shifts can end at 9:30 pm.
Essential Bookseller Functions:
- Maintain and organize inventory
- Process POS (point of sale) purchases and complete register transactions quickly and accurately
- Keep workstations, displays, and the general mezzanine area clean and orderly
- Communicate with management about any issues regarding the upkeep of facilities
- Handsell books to customers
- Maintain visual standards (includes shelving, alphabetizing where appropriate, and assisting in making seasonal displays)
- A broad awareness of current publishing, including comfort and knowledge in different genres
Event Duties:
- Attend and host events: introduce the speakers and close out the event
- Oversee and execute events held at the bookstore
- Maintain the mezzanine area & keep water refilled
- Open and serve wine when purchased by clients
- Check in guests
- Assist with Social Media work: creating graphics, taking pictures during event, posting on stories, and collaborating on posts
- Some nights and weekends required; hours and daily schedule will vary.
- Must genuinely enjoy being around and talking to people! Must communicate well in person, on the phone, and via email.
- Arranging hosting for events you will not attend
- Set-up and break down for seating for events over 80 people
Competency/Position Requirements:
- Spending one/two shifts per week on the floor as a bookseller
- Must be able to complete tasks with speed, accuracy, and attention to detail
- Ability to work independently and as a member of a team
- Ability to bend, stoop, and lift boxes to 40 pounds. Ability to be on your feet for hours at a time.
- Must be flexible and solution-focused while working on multiple projects across the store
- Ability to work at least 15 – 20 hours per week
- Evening shifts required
- Compensation: $17 hourly
